Xpect Flu A&B Assay Achieves FDA Clearance for Novel Avian Influenza A (H7N9) Analytical Reactivity Label Claims

10/1/2013

Analytical sensitivity data shows Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Remel Xpect Flu A&B assay is able to detect cultured avian influenza A (H7N9), A/Anhui/1/2013 virus. Analytical reactivity testing for this novel strain is in line with the FDA reclassification proposal for assessing detection of emerging viruses that could potentially cause a public health emergency.

An outbreak in April of the novel influenza A (H7N9) virus infected more than 130 people, and resulted in at least 43 deaths1. While human infections have been limited to China, officials are remaining vigilant in monitoring the virus due to the pandemic potential.

Rapid laboratory results from Xpect Flu A&B facilitate early diagnosis and identification of patients who may benefit from appropriate antiviral treatment. This not only has the potential to shorten the duration and severity of illness, but also reduces the misuse of antibiotics.

“Rapid influenza tests provide quick and clinically useful results to allow for proper treatment on an individual level and an appropriate response at the public health level, which is imperative when managing a novel and particularly virulent virus,” stated Rob Spignesi, vice president and general manager for Microbiology, Americas, for Thermo Fisher Scientific. “Ensuring our Xpect Flu A&B assay effectively detects emerging and potentially threatening influenza viruses is a top priority for Thermo Fisher Scientific, and being able to add this information to label claims is an important accomplishment that we are proud to announce.”

While Xpect Flu A&B can distinguish influenza A and influenza B, it cannot differentiate influenza subtypes, such as influenza A (H7N9). Performance with clinical specimens from patients infected with influenza A (H7N9) has not been established.

In addition to the Xpect Flu A&B assay, Thermo Fisher Scientific provides a broad range of products for respiratory testing, including Xpect RSV, MicroTestTM viral transport, and collection swabs.

1 cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/h7n9-virus as of August 6, 2013

Introducing Thermo Scientific PathoProof Mastitis PCR Assays

4/7/2011

LENEXA, Kan., (April 7, 2011) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the availability of Thermo Scientific PathoProof PCR assays for the U.S. dairy industry. PathoProof is a new line of advanced assays for detecting mastitis-causing bacteria in milk samples. These molecular-based assays improve the quality of our dairy supply by identifying mastitis-causing bacteria in just four hours, compared to days for traditional methods, providing dairy testing laboratories with convenient, fast and accurate test results. Because PathoProof assays rely on DNA, users can perform tests on multiple types of milk samples, including quarter milk samples, milk recording samples, and bulk tank samples, making it easier than ever to manage the costly effects of bovine mastitis.

PathoProof Complete-12 and PathoProof Major-3 Mastitis PCR assays remove barriers to mastitis testing by providing more flexibility in sample types and eliminating the need to specially handle samples. It allows dairy farmers and laboratories to manage positive results in hours instead of days or weeks. The high sensitivity and objective test results possible with PathoProof take the guesswork out of mastitis testing, leading to better herd management.

“The benefits of PathoProof over traditional bacterial culturing for identification of mastitis-causing bacteria are tremendous,” said Sumi Thaker, vice president marketing for Thermo Fisher’s Microbiology business. “Bovine mastitis is responsible for huge losses each year to the dairy industry. Total losses in the US alone exceed $2 billion. It’s time to replace the current method with a new gold standard that improves the quality of our dairy supply faster, more conveniently and with more accuracy.”

Learn more

Spectra UTI™ chromogenic medium improves work flow and saves time in urine testing

9/28/2010

Microbiological examination of urine is one of the most frequently requested tests in the clinical microbiology laboratory and contributes significantly to the daily workload. Of the cultures which are positive for growth, 60-70% will yield E. coli, and 10-15% will yield enterococci, and both can be confirmed using Spectra UTI in just 24 hours. Traditional culture media, such as Blood Agar and MacConkey Agar, have routinely been used to recover organisms causing urinary tract infections. However, organisms grown on these media usually require further differentiation and identification, increasing the turn around time and workload.

Spectra UTI is a chromogenic medium that will grow, differentiate, and presumptively identify common urinary tract infections, reducing turn around time and improving laboratory efficiency. The medium contains two chromogens which react with specific enzymes present in urinary tract pathogens to produce uniquely colored colonies. In addition, phenylalanine and tryptophan are added to the medium for the detection of Proteus spp., Morganella spp., and Providencia spp., while at the same time retarding or inhibiting the swarming of Proteus.

Common urinary tract organisms easily cultured and differentiated on Spectra UTI are E. coli, enterococci, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia, Proteus, Morganella, Providencia, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Thermo Fisher Scientific Receives FDA Clearance of Spectra™ VRE

7/27/2010

Test is First Chromogenic Media to Detect Colonization in 24 Hours with No Required Confirmatory Testing.

LENEXA, Kansas, (July 27, 2010) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, announced today that it received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for Spectra™ VRE, a test designed to screen for vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). Spectra VRE is the first chromogenic media for the 24-hour detection of VRE colonization with rectal swabs and stool specimens. Spectra VRE is manufactured, distributed, and sold by Remel, a product brand of Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are the third leading cause of healthcare associated infections resulting in higher morbidity, mortality, and hospital costs.1, 2 VRE colonization can progress to infection, especially for people with certain risk factors.3 Proactive VRE screening is an important part of an infection control and prevention program to reduce the spread within the hospital. The potential exists for VRE to transfer genetic vancomycin resistance to other gram-positive organisms, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, creating vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA). To date, eleven cases of VRSA have been reported in the U.S., and it remains a serious public health concern due to limited treatment options.4

<a href="http://www.remel.com/HAI/VREArticles.aspx"target="_blank">read more

The media are dispensed into GripFit™ petri dishes which prevent the lids and bottoms from separating when picked up, but also allows for easy removal of the lids, even with one hand. The plates are labeled on the bottom so the information (lot number, expiration date) stays with the sample to prevent mixups. The GripFit™ contact plates are contained in protective outer barrier wraps, which are impermeable to isolator decontamination procedures but maintains the integrity of the media inside. The plates are shrink-wrapped with easy-to-open tear strips. The shrink-wrap maintains moisture levels, prevents breakage, and provides a 6-month shelf life. An extra sterile bag is provided in each Isolator Wrap package for use in transporting the plates to the laboratory for testing after the samples have been obtained. The Isolator Wrap plates are manufactured in a Class 10,000 (ISO Class 7) cleanroom with Class 100 (ISO Class 5) work zones and then are irradiated to ensure a Sterility Assurance Level of 10-6 for the finished products.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Improves Detection of Bacillus cereus Microorganisms in Food

1/19/2010

Lenexa, Kan. (January 19, 2010) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, reports that its agar for identifying Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) can accurately test food and beverages for this illness-causing microorganism. Brilliance™ Bacillus cereus Agar allows laboratories to significantly improve the detection and recovery of B. cereus. Food microbiologists in both manufacturing companies and research laboratories rely on Brilliance Bacillus cereus Agar for rapid identification of the bacterium.

With Brilliance Bacillus cereus Agar, B. cereus is quickly isolated, appearing as colored colonies for precise identification. Food manufacturers can rapidly extract B. cereus if present, investigate the cause of the contamination and, if necessary, alert consumers.

“Although B. cereus poisoning is largely underreported, the recent voluntary recall of ready-to-drink Slim-Fast™ products in the United States and Canada, for example, underscores the need for more vigilant testing,” said Ali Ball, vice president of marketing and new product development for the Thermo Fisher Scientific microbiology business. “We are committed to providing quality products and solutions to help food manufacturers avoid costly recalls or outbreaks and, most importantly, to protect consumers from the consequences of B. cereus poisoning.”

Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that approximately 27,000 cases of B. cereus food poisoning occur each year. However, only 72 were officially reported (none of these in connection with the Slim-Fast™ product recall) during the most recent yearly analysis. This is, at least in part, because B. cereus poisoning symptoms – nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea – closely resemble those of staphylococcal (<a href="http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/FoodborneIllness/FoodborneIllnessFoodbornePathogensNaturalToxins/BadBugBook/ucm070015.htm"Staphylococcus aureus) food poisoning, resulting in misdiagnosis and under-reporting.

B. cereus contamination typically occurs when foods are prepared and held without refrigeration for several hours before serving. For more information about the Brilliance Bacillus cereus Agar, please visit: www.remel.com/chromogenicmedia.

Remel Introduces New Saline 0.45% (3.0 ml in Plastic Tube)*

5/21/2009

Lenexa, Kan., (May 21, 2009) – Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, announced a new product, Saline 0.45% (3.0 ml) in a plastic tube with screw cap for use with automated ID/AST (identification/antimicrobial susceptibility test) systems, specifically the Vitek® 2, manufactured by bioMérieux, Inc. In addition, the company also announced the modification to an existing product, Saline 0.45% (1.8 ml), to be manufactured with the same plastic tube and screw cap. The 1.8 ml product is used with the legacy Vitek® system.

The Saline 0.45% is contained in an easy-to-use plastic tube that is optically clear for ease in adjusting the organism density in the saline in order to standardize the inoculum strength and is also convenient for reading with a Vitek densitometer. By using the Saline 0.45% (3.0 ml), users can eliminate the multi-step process and contamination risk associated with dispensing saline from a large bottle into a small useable plastic tube. Both Saline 0.45% products (1.8 ml and 3.0 ml) can be easily stored, transported, and used with reduced risk of breakage or spillage. The tubes are pre-filled and ready for use.

“The new plastic tube being used with these products will offer increased safety for people working in the laboratory and will make their jobs easier to perform,” says Andy Thomson, vice president and general manager, Microbiology North America at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The plastic tube is ideal for preventing accidental breakage while in the instrument, thereby reducing downtime, costs for cleanup, and reducing the potential risk for exposure to a potentially infectious agent.

The Remel Saline 0.45% in the new plastic tube provides safety, convenience, and ease-of-use when performing automated identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

<a href="http://www.remel.com/Promotions/Vitek/"target="_blank">Learn More

Remel Contact Plates for Environmental Monitoring
Featuring GripFit™ Technology

5/4/2009

Lenexa, Kan., (April 1, 2009) – New and improved GripFit™ plates are now available on Remel Contact Plates for environmental monitoring. The new lid design features a snug fit lid that makes one-handed plate handling easier while minimizing the risk of contamination due to inadvertent lid slippage during plate handling.

In order to assure sterility during environmental monitoring, contact plate lids must fit snuggly, but must be easy to remove with one hand. This minimizes the risk of contaminating other areas of the clean room or isolator with a second hand, which can hold other reagents, pipettes, or laboratory tools. Remel Sterile Contact Plates with the new GripFit™ technology are easier to use in sterile environments and help to ensure the safety and quality of pharmaceutical and biotechnology products.

Remel Sterile Contact Plates are double bagged and have a third bag enclosed for plate transport. Remel Spectra™ MRSA Wins
Medical Design Excellence Award

4/9/2009

Thermo Fisher Scientific recognized for innovation in developing a reliable, economical solution to help control and prevent the spread of MRSA.

Waltham, Mass., (April 24, 2009) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced that its Spectra™ MRSA is a winner in the 2009 Medical Design Excellence Awards competition in the category of in vitro diagnostics. Spectra MRSA is a chromogenic culture medium for the detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which aids in the control and prevention of MRSA in healthcare settings. This powerful solution offers the highest Positive Predictive Value (98.1%) of any MRSA test on the market. Pressures are mounting on healthcare organizations to reduce hospital acquired infections like MRSA and also to control associated costs. Affordable and easy to use, Spectra MRSA is designed to help healthcare organizations screen more patients on more shifts in more hospitals.

“The design of Spectra MRSA combines the simplicity of microbiological culture media with the high-value and accuracy expected from a diagnostic test,” said Tom Floyd, president, microbiology products, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “It is truly a practical, high-performing solution to a pathogen that is causing serious public health concerns. We are honored that Spectra MRSA is being recognized with a Medical Design Excellence Award and proud to deliver a solution that makes an impact in how hospitals fight MRSA.”

The Medical Design Excellence Award, organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC (Los Angeles), is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Spectra MRSA was evaluated and selected for the award based on its design features and user-related functions that improve healthcare, and for providing enhanced benefits to patients.

Spectra MRSA received FDA clearance in February 2008, amidst growing concerns about the spread and danger of MRSA. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently estimating two million healthcare associated infections, 99,000 associated deaths each year in the U.S. and over $4.5 billion to $6.5 billion in treatment costs and excess hospital days. According to a 2007 study by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, 1.2 million U.S. hospital patients may be infected with MRSA each year, and up to 119,000 hospital patients each year may die from MRSA. Spectra MRSA is well positioned to economically assist hospitals in their quest to control these types of infections.

Spectra MRSA is manufactured, distributed, and sold in the U.S. under the Thermo Fisher Scientific specialty brand, Remel. Ribbon cutting in Lenexa celebrates growth and success of Microbiology division

5/30/2008

Thursday, May 29, we hosted a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the recent expansion to our Lenexa Microbiology operation and to bring awareness to the local community that we are one of the area’s largest scientific employers. City and state government officials were present to acknowledge the importance of the event and to join with other local Bioscience leaders and business partners to tour the facility, network with each other, and celebrate the event with a representative set of employees. It was a wonderful opportunity to reach out to the local community and remind people that we are a great place to work and that we are doing great things to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer through Microbiology.

The Lenexa operation develops, manufactures and supports Remel brand products, a portfolio of high quality products used by clinical, industrial, research, and academic laboratories. The Remel products portfolio includes over 6000 items. Items include dehydrated and prepared culture media, collection and transport systems, diagnostic and rapid direct specimen tests, quality control products, and other laboratory supplies. The expansion project recently completed was targeted at one of four Microbiology facilities in Lenexa. This particular facility went from general office and warehouse space to a now state-of-the-art manufacturing, scientific development, training, and administration facility. The new space is occupied by approximately 40 employees and is now home to our Dehydrated Culture Media operation, MPD lab (Media and Process Development), new Chemistry lab, and fully equipped training and presentation facilities.

From left: JR Robl, KS Dept. of Commerce; Janice Katterhenry, Kansas Bioscience Authority; Mike Boehm, Mayor of Lenexa; Tom Wilson, Thermo Fisher Scientific; Tom Thornton, Kansas Bioscience Authority; Craig Knutzen, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Tom Wilson, Vice President and General Manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific, Microbiology NA, hosted the event. “This expansion positively affects all elements of our Lenexa operation,” Wilson said. “We are creating new products for our market, new service levels for our customers and new jobs for our community.”

“Our vision is to be the preferred partner for our customers and a world leader in Microbial Diagnostics.” Wilson said. “Today we are realizing this desired outcome thanks to a cooperative effort between Thermo Fisher Scientific, the Kansas Bioscience Authority, the Kansas Department of Commerce and local Lenexa government.”

The recent expansion was made possible in large part by a recent investment from the Kansas Bioscience Authority (KBA), which agreed to invest up to $1.25 million over the next five years as we continue to invest in our local Microbiology operation and expand our local workforce. Tom Thornton, president and CEO for the KBA, spoke at the event and recognized how truly important Thermo Fisher Scientific is to the state. He commended the company for its commitment to innovation and to developing products that make a difference in the lives of Kansans. “Kansas ranks 2nd in the United States for clinical research facilities,” Thornton said. “You all are a significant contributor to that.” He also said “this is a fantastic company with fantastic employees. I am very proud to have the opportunity to be part of your growth and success. We wish you all the best.”
